Location
An enchanting territory, enclosed between the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and furrowed by the Serchio river. The Garfagnana, with the Media Valle del Serchio, is a fascinating area of chestnut woods, small ancient villages and evocative scenery.
Nature dominates unchallenged, with forests that are still untouched and peaks that exceed 2,000 metres. The highest peak in Tuscany stands out in Garfagnana: this is Mount Prado, which reaches a height of 2054 metres near Sillano. Giuncugnano, at 885 metres, is instead the highest village. Nature itself offers spaces that are now a reserve, such as the Orecchiella Park; unique formations such as the Grotta del Vento; the Orrido di Botri, an extraordinary canyon; and the waters of the Lima torrent, which has become a paradise for sportsmen. Protected by the mountains, there are many small and large centres, all unique and all united in offering splendid views, curiosities and extraordinary cuisine. The main towns include, in terms of size, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, with its famous 11th-century fortress, and Barga, adopted homeland of the poet Giovanni Pascoli, which, with its alleyways, is counted among the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Also worth visiting are the villages of Coreglia Antelminelli, also among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy; Fabbriche di Vergemoli with the Hermitage of Calomini; Gallicano. There are also many small villages clinging to the sides of the mountains from which one can enjoy a splendid panorama, such as the centre of San Pellegrino in Alpe, where the view can sweep from Cimone to Libro Aperto to Mount Giovo and where the Don Luigi Pellegrini Ethnographic Museum of the Mountains is also located, with over four thousand objects bearing witness to the customs and activities of rural life. Descending further down the valley, in the direction of Lucca, just as well known and just as pleasant, is Borgo a Mozzano, which amazes the traveller with the exciting discovery of its famous Ponte della Maddalena (better known as Ponte del Diavolo and famous for the asymmetrical shape of its arches) and Bagni di Lucca, a renowned spa centre since the time of the ancient Romans
